My father gave me a couple of great pointers when I started looking for my first home. He told me to make sure I had a home inspection, and an HVAC inspection done on the house. He told me to check the certifications on when the roof had last been replaced, when the sand amount had been installed, and if it has ever backed up. He told me to ‌ask the HVAC inspector how old the furnace and air conditioning unit were, and to have the chimney checked. He must've had a list of 30 things on that paper, and they all pertained to the structure of the house and the HVAC system. By the time I got done asking the questions and having them answered, the contractor told me he didn't really have much more to tell me, which made me laugh. The HVAC contractor was just the opposite. He explained that the air conditioning unit was not the proper size for the house when it was installed, and it was still not the proper size. He suggested I have them install a new HVAC system prior to buying the house. He'd already done measurements for the house, and gave me the tonnage of the air conditioning unit that I should have, and also the parameters for the new furnace. The owners weren't amenable to installing a brand-new HVAC system, but they were willing to take the cost of the HVAC system off the price of the home. I would've preferred they had put the HVAC system in for me, but I asked to have the extra $10,000 put into an account and earmarked just for the brand-new HVAC system.

I wanted to have my air conditioning unit cleaned, inspected, and checked for any repairs that could be made prior to the summer. When I talked to the HVAC company dispatcher, she told me ‌they could have an HVAC technician at my house about two days. I asked for a time when he would be there, and she gave me a three-hour window. It surprised me that the HVAC technician showed up on time, and that it was not a technician. They sent the HVAC contractor to my house. He said he was going to look at my air conditioning unit, and since I've been told two years in a row that I needed a new air conditioning unit, he would check to see what size air conditioning unit I needed in case that was the situation. After doing the inspection, he measured my house, asked a lot of questions about how many people were there and what our daily habits were? He told me that the air conditioning unit could be repaired, but he would not suggest it. He said the normal lifespan for an air conditioning unit was 15 years, and mine was almost 20 years old. Instead of repairing the old air conditioning unit, he thought it would be best for me to have a new one installed. He explained how the efficiency of my air conditioning unit was so much lower than what they could offer to me now. He also explained how a new air conditioning unit could give me the ability to install a whole home air purification system. I told him I had to talk to my husband, but if he had no problem with a new AC unit, I would call them back.

I may have been new to the HVAC company, but I was not new to the HVAC business. I had worked as an HVAC in the city for almost 15 years. When my wife was offered a job as a principal in another area, I told her to take the job. As an HVAC technician, I could work anywhere. I couldn't think of a single place in the world where they didn't need an HVAC technician somewhere. We found a house right outside of town and moved as soon as school ended in June. She wanted to spend the entire summer getting prepared for working in her new location, and learning more about the area, the teachers, and others she would work with. It didn't take long for me to find a job with the local HVAC company. I guess I didn't realize how demanding and gruff I had become while working in the city. I treated my new HVAC clients like I treated the superintendents and owners of the apartment buildings that I did HVAC work for in the city. It wasn't until the owner of the HVAC company called me into his office one afternoon that I realized I had a problem. He told me the HVAC technicians thought I was difficult to work with. After reflecting on the way I was behaving, I knew I was the problem, and I had to correct it. It took me a month to change the way the other HVAC technicians consider me, but I was still a way from understanding how to work with the customers.
